Pacific Gas and Electric’s GIS supports a broad range of internal and external needs and includes large, varied data sets, ranging from natural resource and wildlife tracking to transmission line data. PG&Es complex GIS coupled with their extensive client-user base created inefficient business processes, especially the task of identifying and tracking power poles along transmission lines. GIS applications and training were required to provide users with customized tools, ensuring a more focused and accurate data analysis and tracking process.
Farallon completed a thorough inventory and understanding of PG&Es GIS, especially its Oracle Spatial database core and was able to create a technical strategy to support PG&Es specific GIS needs. Farallon and the PG&E GIS support team reviewed the configuration and implementation of Oracle Spatial 9i geared toward user-customized applications. Farallon provided Oracle PL/SQL database programming support and developed a JSP-based Oracle Mapviewer pilot website for user-friendly viewing of transmission line data. Once technical implementation was complete, Farallon provided knowledge transfer and training to the PG&E staff to ensure the future success of the new applications.
The customized applications and website improved analysis capabilities for power pole/transmission line issues and simplified enterprise access to power pole/transmission line data, creating a more streamlined and effective business processes.
